A key component of the historic Lions Tour to South Africa in 1974, Dick Milliken scored six tries across the unbeaten, including a vital try in the Second Test.
The Irish centre had only made his debut against England in the previous year’s Five Nations where he scored a try in an 18-9 win at Lansdowne Road.
In South Africa, Milliken scored four tries in as many games prior to the first Test which the Lions won 12-3 at Newlands. He maintained his good form with another try against Transvaal before crossing as one of five try-scorers in the 28-9 victory in the second Test.
An incredibly successful tour saw the Lions run out 3-0 winners, with the final Test drawn 13-13.
Unfortunately Milliken’s international sporting career came to an abrupt end after just 14 Irish caps when he broke his leg and ankle during a game though he continued to play club rugby for his home town of Bangor.
