Don Rutherford toured Australia and New Zealand with The British & Irish Lions in 1966, although his involvement was cut short due to a broken arm.

The Englishman featured in the first Test against Australia - the Lions winning the opener 11-8 with Rutherford kicking five points.

But on the New Zealand leg of the Tour he broke his arm playing against Manawatu.

He subsequently missed the remaining four Tests against the All Blacks as he was flown home where he could have a metal plate fitted in his arm.

The full-back played just one more international game after that - against New Zealand for England in 1967 - and earned 14 caps for his country in total.

He would go on to become the RFU’s first technical director, and then director of rugby, a role he held from 1969 to 1999. He was awarded the OBE in 2000 in recognition of his service to rugby union, and the Dyson Award for sports coaching in 1999.

He died aged 79 in November 2016.
