Hooker Dorian West answered a late call from head coach Graham Henry to join the squad for the Tour to Australia in 2001, cutting a summer holiday short to jet Down Under following an injury to England’s Phil Greening.
West’s sole appearance in the famous red jersey came in Canberra, where the Lions defeated the ACT Brumbies 30-28.
The reigning Super 12 champions looked set to stun the Lions, but Henry’s men hit back to snatch victory at the death when Matt Dawson converted Austin Healey’s try.
West did well enough in that game to earn a place among the replacements for the final two Tests of the series, but failed to emerge from the bench.
