While Doug Baker’s England career was limited to only four appearances as a fly-half, the Old Merchant Taylors FC player enjoyed his finest moments in Test rugby in the red of The British & Irish Lions.
Showcasing his skills against the very best for London Counties and South-Eastern Counties in 1953 and 1954, Baker impressed against New Zealand and was invited to play for the Barbarians - for whom he scored 20 points in eight appearances.
That yielded a Test debut for England against Wales in Cardiff, but despite playing for the Red Rose as a fly-half, Baker was preferred at full-back by 1955 Lions coach Jack Siggins.
South Africa was the destination for that Tour, and with the Lions level at 1-1 in the four-match series, Baker was called into the side for the all-important third Test in Pretoria.
He scored an ultimately decisive penalty in the Lions 9-6 victory that meant they could not lose the series, and then played again at No.15 as the Springboks pegged the tourists back in the final Test.
