Edward Walker, the youngest of nine children, grew up as a winger of some repute in the south of England as a member of Lennox Football Club in his native Dulwich.
And though he was overlooked by England across his playing career, he did not escape the attentions of the Lions ahead of the 1903 Tour to South Africa.
He appeared nine times in a Lions jersey – scoring a try against Orange River County – and, as well as being a consistent performer, he was noted for an entirely different reason by the local press.
His brother, Jonny, was captured during the Boer War despite being a non-combatant, but eventually escaped and became a man of some fame in Durban.
Upon the end of his playing days, Walker stayed in the game as a referee and was appointed honorary secretary of the London Rugby Society of Referees in 1909.
