Elliot Nicholson became the first Birkenhead Park player ever to represent The British & Irish Lions when he was selected for the 1899 Tour of Australia.

Described by the Tour’s captain – Matthew Mullineux - as “a very fast wing”, Nicholson was not chosen for either of the first two Tests against Australia with Ireland’s Gerry Doran preferred.

But after he was brought in for the third Test, the Lions won a nail-biting encounter 11-10 and Nicholson kept his place for the fourth and final Test.

His performances in Australia caught the eye of the England selectors, and Nicholson was brought into the England team for the 1900 Home Nations Championship, during which he played two games for the Red Rose – winning one and losing the other.
