Eric Milroy was part of the 1910 Lions Tour of South Africa but illness restricted him to just three appearances - none of them in Tests.
Milroy studied mathematics at Edinburgh University while playing for Watsonians winning five Scottish Club Championships.
In 1910, Milroy was handed his Scotland debut, replacing captain George Cunningham in the side. Scotland lost 14-0 to Wales in Cardiff but Milroy emerged from the match - played in conditions described as dismal - with credit from the Welsh press.
He captained Scotland in the final match before the outbreak of World War One with England winning 16-15 in Inverleith.
In September 1914, Milroy joined the 9th Royal Scots from the Watsonian Military Training Corps and in December that year was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 11th Battalion Black Watch. Sent to the Western Front in October the following year, Milroy joined the 8th Battalion and was promoted to Lieutenant in June 1916.
The 8th Black Watch and 10th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, as part of the 26th Brigade of the 9th (Scottish) Division, led the assault of Longueval and, on July 18, Milroy went missing in action, presumed dead.
Milroy is remembered at the Thiepval Memorial to the missing dead of the Somme.
