On the 1899 British & Irish Lions Tour of Australia, Frank Stout acted as on field captain for three of the Tests having made his name playing club rugby for Gloucester.
From 1897 to 1905 the forward won 14 caps for England, and alongside his brother Percy, Stout became one of the first pair of brothers to both score a try for England at international level against Wales in 1898 – a feat that was not matched until 1993 when Rory and Tony Underwood did the same.
Stout played in all 21 matches of the 1899 Tour, scoring four tries in total, and took on the captaincy from Matthew Mullineux after the Lions lost the first Test.
Under his leadership, the tourists went on to win the final three Tests, taking the series 3-1, and Stout rejoined the Lions for the 1903 Tour to South Africa where also played in every Test.
Stout also became a committee member for the invitational touring Barbarian side, and was awarded the Military Cross for his actions while serving on the British lines during the First World War before being promoted to a full Lieutenant in 1918.
