Having already represented Clifton, Bath, Bristol and Abergavenny, Fred Belson was selected for the victorious 1899 British & Irish Lions Tour of Australia.

He was initially denied the six-month leave by his employers, but opted to take the opportunity anyway and left his job behind to sail to Australia in May.

He played seven Tour matches for the Lions, including the first Test against the Wallabies, which the visitors lost 13-3.

Following the tour, in 1900 Belson joined the newly formed Imperial Yeomanry, and travelled to South Africa to serve the British Army in the Second Boer War
