Appearing as part of the 1896 British & Irish Lions squad was just one talent of James ‘Fred’ Byrne, who also captained Warwickshire County Cricket Club.
A full-back, Byrne was imperious with ball in hand and off the tee, ably kicking from defence and also capable of kicking between the posts from halfway.
Those skills earned him a trip to South Africa, scoring 100 points on Tour – and only failing to score in two of his 30 games.
Significantly, the Englishman played in all four Tests, helping the Lions to a 3-1 series success with 11 points in the 1896 Tour.
