Fred Chapman was a stalwart of the 1908 Lions Tour to New Zealand and Australia, where he made 12 appearances including in the third and final Test against the All Blacks.

Comfortable in the centres or on the wing, South Shields-born Chapman was a scoring machine in the Tour – racking up a hat-trick against Poverty Bay, in addition to try doubles against Hawke’s Bay and Newcastle.

After the Tour, Chapman would go on to make seven Test appearances for England and holds the distinction of being the first man to score an international try at Twickenham after crossing the whitewash inside a minute of the 11-6 triumph over Wales in 1910.
