Fred Jackson got his taste of Lions action on the 1908 Tour to New Zealand and Australia – racking up six appearances in total.
A powerful goal-kicker, the Cornish forward slotted a conversion against the All Blacks in the Lions’ 32-5 opening-Test defeat at Dunedin, in front of 23,000 people.
Jackson also scored a try in the 22-3 win over West Coast/Buller and never returned to England upon conclusion of the Tour, opting to remain in New Zealand and marry a Maori woman named Horowai Henderson.
He went on to captain Auckland’s rugby league side against the touring Great Britain Lions in 1910 and also represented New Zealand in rugby league – playing against the country of his birth, England, that same year.
