Born in Somerset, Froude Hancock was a fine all-round sportsman, and made his England rugby debut in 1886.
One of ten brothers, his elder sibling Frank represented Wales, although the two never faced off at international level.
Hancock earned a second cap in 1890, and a year later was selected as part of Bill Maclagan’s Lions Tour to South Africa.
The forward played 17 matches on the Tour, including all three Test matches, and returned to the country five years later with the Lions.
Hancock played a further 16 matches on his second Tour, and scored his first points in the second Test with a try as the Lions won the series 3-1.
He was also one of the original members of the Barbarians.
