A gifted all-round sportsman who excelled at both cricket and rugby, fly-half Gareth Davies earned his call up to tour with the Lions to South Africa in 1980.
He played the opening Tour match against Eastern Province on May 10, chipping in with 11 points during the 28-16 win and a try-scoring appearance against Transvaal on June 7 saw Davies handed the jersey for the second Test in Bloemfontein.
The Lions lost a hard-fought contest 26-19 and unfortunately, Davies also injured his knee, ruling him out of the rest of a series which South Africa went on to win 3-1.
Davies, who won 21 caps for Wales and captained his country five times, was elected chairman of the Welsh Rugby Union in October 2014.
