Gary Armstrong was known as the ‘Border Terrier’, an apt metaphor for a man who may have lacked in size but knew how to make himself a nuisance.
He has gone down in history as one of Scotland’s greatest players – having captained the side to the 1999 Championship – but his one and only Lions call had come a decade prior.
Armstrong followed in the footsteps of another superb Scottish scrum-half, Roy Laidlaw, in 1989 and made a big impression even though a Lions Test cap proved elusive.
Then 22, he scored five tries in five games in Australia – including an effort against Australia B – with Rob Jones the No.9 of preference for the Tests.
Serious knee injuries in 1992 and 1994 ultimately ensured that a second Lions call-up was beyond him, but there is no doubt he had enough quality for the famous red jersey.
