A replacement on the 1971 Tour to New Zealand, the ‘original’ Geoff Evans from Llanelli played for the Lions, three years prior to his English namesake from Coventry being selected.

Similarly to his namesake, Evans did not crack the Test side but did feature in six fixtures on the Tour and scored a single try against Auckland.

He made his Welsh debut in 1970 in Cardiff, a 6-6 draw with South Africa, and earned seven caps for his country with his final appearance being against France in 1972.

Evans was appointed as a Wales selector in 1993 and became manager of the Wales national team in 1995, just months prior to the Rugby World Cup, after Wales lost all four matches of that year’s Five Nations.
