Described by 1899’s British & Irish Lions captain Matthew Mullineux as a ‘capital worker’, forward George Gibson was selected for 17 of the 20 Tour matches of Australia.
Born in Gateshead into a rugby-playing family, he was the brother of England international Charles and future Lion Thomas Gibson – who toured South Africa in 1903.
Despite playing only the single game for England, he was offered a place on the Tour in 1899 and featured in all four Tests against Australia.
He scored his only try of the trip against Newcastle, and on his return was invited to join the Barbarians touring side.
