Sale’s George Isherwood was both a talented cricketer and a superb half-back who played in the first ‘official’ British & Irish Lions Tour to South Africa in 1910.
After attending Ramsey Grammar School on the Isle of Man and then Dulwich College, Isherwood turned out for highly-successful Cheshire and Sale sides.
Isherwood was a key part of the Sale side that went unbeaten during their 1911 50th Anniversary season.
He then became Sale’s first representative in an international Test match when playing all three Tests for the Lions against South Africa in 1910.
The Lions lost the Test series 2-1 – winning the second international – and though Isherwood was a key part of that side, he was never capped for England.
Isherwood played 19 times at scrum-half for the Lions in South Africa and never scored a try.
