A Hexham-born forward, George Lee was part of The British & Irish Lions side to travel to South Africa in 1896, playing eight Tour games across the summer.

He was to miss out on a place in the Test side, in no small part due to the strength of the Lions’ front-row, with his first taste of the famous Lions jersey to come against Port Elizabeth.

Lee was to play another seven games in the space of a month, including three in five days late in the Tour, although was unable to cross the try line.

Lee died during the Second World War, aged 71 in 1943.
