Having made his debut for Ireland in 1934, in which he scored his first try in international colours against England, George Morgan was appointed his country’s captain for the 1936-37 season, and retained the honour for two further seasons.

In 1938, he was selected as one of eight Irishmen for the Lions Tour to South Africa, where he made 11 appearances in the famous red jersey, including in one Test match against the Springboks.

One of few sportsmen to have played both rugby and cricket for Ireland, Morgan was made Lions captain for their victory against North East Districts, and following his premature retirement from the sport due to the onset of World War II, was elected president of both Old Belvedere RFC and Belvedere College Union in ensuing years.
