Born in Chard, Gerald Kyrke played as a forward for Marlborough Nomads, one of the country’s earliest rugby clubs, and in 1903, was offered a place to tour with the Barbarians.
Five years later, he was selected as one of 14 forwards to tour New Zealand and Australia with the Lions, the only Nomads player to be chosen.
On that Tour, he made 11 appearances in the famous red jersey, including the first Test against New Zealand, and scored a try in the Lions’ 22-3 victory over West Coast/Buller.
