Gilbert Collett studied at Cambridge University after finishing his education at Cheltenham College, but the English county of Gloucestershire was never far from his thoughts.

Collett won his one and only Blue as Cambridge triumphed over Oxford in the 1898 Varsity match and he was also a cricketer of some repute for Gloucestershire County Cricket Club.

And it was while playing rugby for his beloved county, rather than England, that he gained the attention of the Lions.

The utility back was never capped for his country but gained enough local notoriety to make the 1903 trip to South Africa – going on to play all three Test matches for the Lions.

Those appearances were just one part of a busy schedule, as Collett scored eight tries in a staggering 20 games over a two-month span.

Collett also embarked on a distinguished military career and reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel with the British Army.

He saw action in World War One and helped to officiate a touch rugby match between troops from the Gloucestershire Regiment.
