Following injuries to Gareth Edwards and Roger Young, Gordon Connell was drafted in as a late replacement for the last three games of the 1968 Tour to South Africa.

The scrum-half had earned his first cap for Scotland the year before in a defeat to England, in which he made his one and only score – a drop-goal – in Test rugby.

And his next Test appearance would be against South Africa in Johannesburg after playing two warm-up games in three days against Orange Free State and North-East Districts – ultimately ending in a 19-6 loss for the Lions.

Connell, who played his club rugby for London Scottish, was also involved in the first-ever substitution in the Five Nations after retiring injured against France in 1969.
