Twice a British & Irish Lions tourist, Gordon Waddell’s two Test starts for the Lions both came in South Africa in 1962.

After touring New Zealand and Australia in 1959, Waddell followed in his father Herbert’s footsteps three years later by becoming a Lions Test fly-half and the pair hold the unique distinction of being the only father-son duo to have both started in the same position for Scotland, the Barbarians and the Lions.

Former Scotland captain Waddell played 18 times for his country and in 1962, masterminded the Scots’ first victory over Wales in Cardiff for two decades.

His two Lions Tests against South Africa were both remarkably low-scoring affairs – a 3-0 loss and a 3-3 draw – but it was on that 1962 Tour that he met his future wife Mary Oppenheimer.

He later relocated to South Africa and became an MP for Johannesburg North, campaigning against apartheid under the Progressive Federal Party banner.
