Gwyn Evans will perhaps not go down as one of the most vaunted players to ever pull on a Lions Jersey, but his peers were in full admiration of the Wales full-back.
Evans, who played for hometown club Maesteg for his entire domestic career, won the Welsh Rugby Writers Player of the Year in 1982 after a spectacular season.
He made 50 Test points faster than any Wales player in history – reaching the amount on his fifth start – and kicked a then world record six penalties in a 22-12 win over France.
As such, a year later he was christened a Lion and started at full-back for the last two Tests in New Zealand, scoring a penalty in the latter, while also notably bagging a try-double against Wairarapa/Bush.
