Despite having made only one appearance for Ireland, Harry McKibbin was selected for the Lions Tour to South Africa in 1938 as one of the youngest and most inexperienced members of the squad.
His combination of swift offensive play and textbook tackling came to the fore in South Africa, where he matured almost instantly into the mainstay of the Lions three-quarter line and was the only back to appear in all three Tests against the Springboks.
Following his premature exit from the game as the Second World War brought international competition to a halt, McKibbin rose to become one of the most significant administrators of his time, becoming an Irish selector from 1960 and acting as assistant manager for the Lions Tour to South Africa in 1962.
