Nicknamed ‘jumbo’, Henry Vassall was a powerhouse centre who toured Australia and New Zealand with the Lions in 1908.

Born in Torrington, Devon, Vassall was the nephew of Harry Vassall – the man who scored a hat-trick in the first-ever match between England and Wales.

The younger Vassall attended Bedford School and Oxford University, making one appearance for England – against Ireland – before being selected by the Lions in 1908.

He would play in seven games on that Tour, including all three Tests against New Zealand.
