Born in Sunderland, England half-back Howard Marshall was part of the 1891 Lions Tour to South Africa.
On the Tour Marshall played 11 games in all, including two of the Tests, and scored seven tries.
After returning to British shores, he won his one and only England cap in 1893, scoring a hat-trick in a memorable game against Wales.
In order to stop the ground from freezing, hundreds of braziers were left on the pitch overnight, leaving huge black marks on the pitch on the day of the game.
Despite Marshall’s hat-trick, Wales came back to win the game and he did not feature for England again.
