Born in North Berwick, Hugh Gray never played for Scotland but had trialled for the side before his call-up to the 1899 British & Irish Lions Tour of Australia.

He played 17 of 20 Tour matches, scoring tries against Toowoomba and Bundaberg, and in the first and second Tests against the Wallabies.

Despite usually plying his trade as a forward, Gray was switched out to the wing in place of Alf Bucher for the second Test – which The Lions went on to win 11-0.
