A confident full-back with ten tries in 37 Tests for Ireland, Hugo MacNeill got the nod for Lions Tour of New Zealand just two years after making his international debut in 1981.
But, after helping Ireland to Championship and Triple Crown titles in 1982, Willie John McBride adjudged his 24-year-old compatriot to be ready for the big stage.
The Tour started well for MacNeill after kicking a penalty against Auckland, the first of his nine appearances.
MacNeill did enough in the Tour games to earn a spot in the Test side, and started the first two matches against the All Blacks before coming off the bench to replace Ollie Campbell in the final Test.
