Known as the ‘Prince of Centres’, John ‘Jack’ Jones was born in Pontypool as the youngest of four brothers, three of whom played rugby for Wales.

Widely held as Pontypool’s first rugby ‘superstar’, Jones, who also played for Monmouthshire, Newport and London Welsh, made his international debut against Australia in 1908, before going on to amass a further 13 caps for Wales.

The centre was known for his explosive and dynamic runs, as well as his superb passing accuracy, and in the same year of his Welsh debut, Jones was selected to tour New Zealand and Australia with the Lions.

On that Tour, he made 20 appearances in the famous red jersey, including all three Test matches, and two years later, featured in three games against the Springboks in the Lions’ 1910 Tour of South Africa.
