Born on Christmas Day 1880 in Redruth, Cornwall, James Davey spent many years working in the gold mines of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, and captained Transvaal from 1904 to 1906.
Nicknamed ‘Maffer’, Davey played twice for England upon his return to British shores, losing to Scotland in 1908 and Wales the following year.
In 1908, he was a member of the silver medal-winning British rugby team at the Olympic Games in London, the same year in which he toured New Zealand and Australia with the Lions.
On that Tour, he made 13 appearances in the famous red jersey, scoring two tries in the Lions’ 26-0 victory over Poverty Bay, with two more coming against Waganui and NSW Waratahs.
