Jamie Roberts went to Australia in 2013 having recently qualified as a doctor from Cardiff University. In so doing he followed in the famous footsteps of Teddy Morgan, Jack Jones, Tuan Jones, Jack Matthews and JPR Williams as Welsh rugby playing doctors who have toured with the Lions.

Roberts' first Lions experience came four years earlier in South Africa when the Welsh centre made such an impact in the first two Tests - forming a potent partnership with Brian O'Driscoll - that he was named the Lions Player of the Series despite their narrow defeat.

Following that tour, Roberts' stock continued to grow. He helped Wales to the Rugby World Cup semi-finals in 2011, the Grand Slam in 2012 and another Championship in 2013.

However, on the Lions tour to Australia in 2013, Roberts suffered a hamstring strain against the Waratahs and looked unlikely to feature in any of the Test matches against the Wallabies.

But he staged a fantastic recovery and replaced his former centre partner O'Driscoll in the starting XV for the third and final Test in Sydney, scoring a try as the Lions cruised to an historic series win.
