Jerry Walsh’s affiliation with The British & Irish Lions was perhaps bittersweet as he had to cut his time on the 1966 Tour of Australia and New Zealand short.

The Irishman, didn’t feature in any of the six Tests as he had to return home early from Australia after his father fell unwell.

The centre, who retired young aged 28 to pursue a career as a doctor, was capped 26 times by his country between 1960 and 1967.

Regarded as one of the greatest defensive centres of his era, his defining moment perhaps came in his final international appearance.

Walsh scored his one and only try for Ireland in an 11-5 win over Australia in Sydney, the first time any of the home nations had won an international in the southern hemisphere.
