Joe Marler has developed into one of the most ferocious props in the world, as dangerous in the loose as he is at the scrum, making him a potent weapon for The British & Irish Lions in New Zealand this summer.

Ever since he played at Haywards Heath, along with fellow England international and 2013 Lions tourist Billy Twelvetrees, Marler seemed destined for the top of the tree and his rise was rapid, culminating in an international debut aged just 22.

After missing the 2009 U20 World Cup through injury, Marler quickly made up for lost time – scoring two tries on his first start against Wales in the 2010 U20 Six Nations.

The man from Eastbourne then made his Aviva Premiership debut for Harlequins that season, and quickly established himself as one of their most important players – starting in their thrilling 30-23 Aviva Premiership final victory against Leicester Tigers in 2012.

Months later he became an England international, making his debut against South Africa in the two-Test series as his rivalry for the No 1 jersey with 2013 Lion Mako Vunipola began.

Both have become constant Test players and have wrestled the starting jersey off each other for the past four years – challenging one another and ensuring both improve year on year.

At club level, Marler’s influence grew quickly and with Chris Robshaw occupied with England captaincy duties, Marler inherited the armband.

Marler was handed the starting England jersey during the 2015 Rugby World Cup, and started three times as Eddie Jones’ side swept to the 2016 RBS 6 Nations title and the Grand Slam.

After missing the summer Tour to Australia, Marler slotted seamlessly back into the squad earlier this year – rediscovering his best form as England successfully defended their RBS 6 Nations title.
