John Beattie’s first taste of Lions action came in 1980, selected for the Tour of South Africa although he was unable to force his way into the Test XV.
A No.8, the Scot had only made his international debut that year, but his Lions experience was by no means a wasted one, giving him the ideal preparation to don the famous jersey once more in New Zealand three years later.
Impressive in the warm-up matches, Beattie crossed four times including twice against Wairarapa Bush – earning him selection for the second clash against the All Blacks, his first and only Lions Test.
Beattie earned 24 caps for Scotland overall, with son Johnnie following in his footsteps into the international game.
John senior was not done there however, featuring in the IRB Centenary Celebrations against the Rest of the World XV in 1986, scoring the only Lions try in the contest.
