Few can match John Bevan’s try record for the Lions after he scored 18 times in 15 matches during the victorious 1971 Tour to New Zealand, amassing 72 points in the process – a feat made even more impressive by the fact he was only 20 at the time and had played as a back row until sixth form.

The wing’s 12 tries in his opening seven matches of the Tour earned him a place in the starting XV during the 9-3 first Test win over New Zealand.

He didn’t start another Test but his four-try haul against Manawatu/Horowhenua did ensure he averaged a try a game for his final six contests of the Tour.

Bevan earned ten caps for Wales during a two-year period, which included the victorious Five Nations campaigns in 1971 and 1973, before he decided to switch codes at the age of 22 and move to Warrington.
