One of many great England players in the 1980 Grand Slam side to ply their club trade in the north of England, Orrell winger John Carleton toured twice with the Lions.
After making his international debut in 1979, he helped England to the clean sweep the following year, scoring a hat-trick in the clincher against Scotland at Murrayfield.
The first treble by an Englishman for more than 50 years, Carleton earned a place on the Tour to South Africa and played three Tests against the Springboks, while also managing three tries in the tour games.
He was selected once more in 1983 to face the All Blacks, and again played in three Tests, while also racking up nine tries in 11 matches in all on the Tour.
