The father of Scottish Rugby League player Struan Douglas, John Douglas won his first international cap for Scotland in 1961, and was capped twelve times as No 8 for his country.

In 1962, he was selected for the Lions’ 1962 Tour to South Africa, and while he did not appear in any of the Test matches against the Springboks, Douglas played on ten occasions in the famous red jersey on that Tour, scoring three points against Eastern Province Kings.

Following his retirement from rugby, Douglas became a racehorse owner, and in 1979, his horse Rubstic won the Grand National.
