While captain of Penarth, John Dyke won his first and only international cap for Wales in 1906 against the touring South Africans.

After spells with both London Welsh and Coventry, the full back retained his loyalty to Penarth, and in 1908, was one of three Penarth players chosen to represent the Lions on their tour of New Zealand and Australia.

Dyke, who later went on to be a solicitor, made 13 appearances in the famous red jersey, and scored 11 points on the Tour, but was not selected to play in any of the three Test matches against New Zealand.
