With no World Cup to play in those days, John Pullin achieved everything a man could in rugby.

Two years after his England international debut, the hooker was selected for the 1968 Tour to South Africa, and while the Lions did not win the series, Pullin played three Tests on the trip, part of 11 games on the Tour.

Success was more forthcoming following a trip to New Zealand three years later, playing four Tests in the more than productive series win against the All Blacks.

Pullin played 16 matches on that Tour, taking his grand total to 27 in the famous Lions jersey, playing a key part in the Lions’ 2-1 victory at hooker.

The Englishman went on to captain his country, becoming the first European captain to secure wins over Australia, New Zealand and South Africa – all in the space of 18 months, giving him the distinction of beating the All Blacks with three different teams – England, the Barbarians and, most impressively of all, the Lions.
