Belgium-born John Raphael was a talented sportsman, playing rugby for both England and The British & Irish Lions and first-class cricket with Surrey.
On the rugby field, Raphael played at centre, full-back or on the wing and won his first cap in 1902 when England took on Wales in the Home Nations Championships.
One of only four players on the Combined British touring team to Argentina in 1910 with previous international experience, he was named as captain.
Raphael led by example, scoring a try and a conversion to help the tourists beat Argentina 28-3 in the sole Test in Buenos Aires.
The son of multi-millionaire financier Albert Raphael, he served as a Lieutenant in World War I and died of wounds in 1917 at the Battle of Messines.
