John Rutherford is regarded as one of the finest fly-halves of his generation and was part of the 1983 Tour to New Zealand, while he also featured for the Lions in the IRB Centenary Celebrations match against a Rest of the World XV in 1986.

Rutherford was one of only two players who scored tries in the four Test matches against New Zealand in 1983, as the Scot – playing at inside centre in his only Test appearance – and Roger Baird crossed during the 15-8 defeat in the third instalment.

The Selkirk star played in ten matches during the Tour to New Zealand and scored 23 points in total, which included another try in the 52-16 win over West Coast.

Rutherford was a natural athlete with a superb rugby brain and went on to develop a pinpoint kicking game as his career progressed and he won 42 caps for Scotland as part of a record-breaking half-back partnership with Roy Laidlaw.
