After first taking up rugby at school in Brecon, John Williams, known as Jack, moved to London and joined London Welsh, as well as turning out for Richmond.

In 1905, he made his international debut for Wales against Ireland, and was a member of the Welsh ‘Champions of the World’ team that famously defeated the All Blacks that year.

Williams won four caps in total for his country, and in 1908, he was selected to tour New Zealand and Australia with the Lions.

He made 15 appearances in total on that Tour, including the second Test against New Zealand, and scored tries in the fixtures against Wellington, Marlborough/Nelson Bays, Metropolitan and Newcastle.
