Known as Johnnie, John Williams was a Welsh international wing who played his club rugby for Cardiff, and was a three-time Triple Crown champion.
At the start of the 1906-07 season, Williams was considered as one of the finest wings in all of the Home Nations, and made his debut for Wales against South Africa in 1906 in the side’s first home defeat in 11 years.
After finishing the 1907-08 season as Cardiff’s top try scorer for the third year running, he was selected for the Lions ahead of their Tour to New Zealand and Australia, playing on 19 occasions.
Two of those appearances came in Test matches against the All Blacks, and he ended the Tour having scored 12 tries for the Lions, the highest of any player in the squad.
