Johnny Hammond enjoyed an extensive Lions career, going on three separate Tours despite the fact that he never played for his native England.

The Skipton-born forward played his club rugby for Cambridge University and Blackheath, and went on his first Lions Tour in 1891 to South Africa.

He played all 20 games on that Tour, including the three Tests as they Lions returned home unbeaten.

He returned to South Africa five years later and captained the team to a 3-1 series victory. He only played in two of the Tests on this Tour, with Tom Crean leading the side in the remainder.

His third Tour was also to South Africa, but this time as a team manager, in 1903.
