Keith Savage’s Test career may have been brief but he packed a lot into a two-year period which saw him tour with the Lions twice.
Playing his club rugby at Northampton, the Loughborough-educated Savage had to wait until he was 25 to earn the recognition of England.
And Savage showed enough during the 1966 Five Nations – despite England’s struggles – for the Lions to invite him on the Tour of Australia and New Zealand that year.
Despite not appearing in any Tests, Savage was a constant try-scoring threat and scored seven from 12 games, including a double against Queensland.
Savage collected 13 England caps – and a try against Wales – before ending his international career as a two-time Lion in 1968.
He was an ever-present in the Test squad, as the Springboks secured a 3-0 series victory, and ended his career having pulled on a red jersey 23 times.
