Lawrence Bulger was one of nine Irishmen making the trip to South Africa in 1896 – and it’s fair to say he made the most of his British & Irish Lions experience.

‘Larry’ was still a student at the time of his selection, going on to play all four Tests, and boasting an admirable try-scoring record to boot.

The wing scored 19 times in the 21 Tour games, including one in the first Test in Port Elizabeth as the Lions went on to prevail in all but one of their Tests.

Port Elizabeth proved a happy hunting ground for Bulger, scoring one of his three Tour hat-tricks on the ground, later going on to open a medical practice with his brother when his playing days came to an end.
