Full-back Lee Byrne's tour to South Africa in 2009 came to a premature end when he suffered a "freak" thumb injury just days before the second Test.
Having scored two tries in three warm-up appearances, Byrne's standing as a key member of the team was rubber-stamped with a start in the first Test against the Springboks.
But he was forced off before half-time with a foot injury and would not pull on the famous red jersey again after hurting his thumb in training a few days later.
The Welshman jetted straight home for treatment and an injury replacement was not called up.
Byrne's last of his 46 caps for Wales came in 2011 and after a spell in France with Clermont Auvergne he returned to Wales and the Newport Gwent Dragons before retiring from rugby for good in 2015.
