After a successful season with Ireland – in which they won a second Championship in three years – the displays of Louis Magee were strong enough for he, and brother James, to get a place on The British & Irish Lions Tour to South Africa in 1896.
A halfback, Magee played 14 games in the famous Lions jersey, including in all four Test matches against South Africa in the 3-1 series victory.
He was to also captain Ireland ten times, playing in 26 consecutive games across eight Championships, a role he fulfilled with great success.
And while he was not renowned for his try scoring, Magee was to score two for the Lions, in a Tour match against Griqualand West.
